What Makes Chinese Pokémon Products Different?

Chinese-language releases follow their own schedule and often use their own box formats, from jumbo and slim booster boxes to gem packs, coin sets and premium gift boxes. That makes them a fascinating, eye-catching corner of any collection.

Simplified and Traditional Chinese

There are two kinds of Chinese Pokémon product, and it’s worth knowing which you’re buying:

  • Simplified Chinese products are made for mainland China. They have their own set names, formats and release dates, such as the Gem series, the 151C collections, Shining Together, Dynamax Clash, Blade Awakening, Paradox Veil and Terastal Grand Gathering.
  • Traditional Chinese products follow the Japanese set list, such as Inferno X, with the text printed in Traditional Chinese.

Chinese Box Formats Explained

  • Slim boxes are compact, lower-priced boxes, ideal for a quick opening.
  • Jumbo or fat boxes hold more packs and often include extras such as promo cards.
  • Gem boxes are a long-running Simplified Chinese series, and we stock several volumes.
  • Gift boxes combine packs with display pieces, such as the V-Union, photo frame, display frame and Radiant Energy binder boxes.
  • Coin and badge sets come as counter display units (CDUs) for collectors who want the full run.

Gift Boxes, ETBs and Figures

Chinese gift boxes are designed for display. Highlights include the Stella Crystal Ogerpon Elite Trainer Boxes in four colours, the Brave Star Mew Elite Trainer Box, Eevee GX gift boxes, Charizard VMAX and VSTAR collections, and seasonal boxes for the Dragon Boat Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival and New Year.

Figure collectors will find mini figure CDUs, Dream Painting figure sets and the Eevee & Friends figures. For boxes only, see Chinese booster boxes.

Chinese 30th Celebration Products

The Chinese 30th Celebration range is one of the most collectable: the booster box, the Espeon ex Deluxe Tin, the Espeon ex & Umbreon ex Collection Box, the Greninja ex Card Display Set, the Prismatic Future gift box, the Charizard Premium Figure Gift Box and the 30th Anniversary First Partner series.

Chinese Pokémon FAQs

What’s the difference between slim and jumbo boxes?

Slim boxes are smaller and cheaper, while jumbo (or fat) boxes contain more packs and often extras. Both open packs from the same set.

Do I need to read Chinese to collect these cards?

No. Most collectors buy Chinese products for the artwork, formats and display pieces, and card numbers make every card easy to identify.

Are Chinese sets the same as English sets?

Not usually. Simplified Chinese sets have their own names and card lists, while Traditional Chinese follows the Japanese sets. Compare with English Pokémon cards or the full Chinese range.
